Automated OIS tests with six degrees of freedom

STEVE executes controlled movements and delivers results about the performance of a cameras image stabilizer. The included control software includes an automated analysis and can also operate the Digitus, a device for automated triggering of a camera.

The Stabilization Evaluation Equipment (STEVE) has been developed for the qualitative analysis of (optical) image stabilizers (OIS). The IS (Image Stabilizer) provides a better image quality by compensating for the human hands natural tremor: if the stabilization is working well, it can prevent blurring in the image.

To conduct measurements with STEVE, a digital camera or mobile phone is mounted securely on the hardware. Using the included software solution, the tester can define any arbitrary motion with six degrees of freedom and thus put STEVE-6D in a controlled vibration. The software also controls Digitus, a remote-controlled, mechanical finger, which presses the cameras shutter button. The resulting images are evaluated by the softwares analysis module. The results provide insight into the image stabilizers performance.

    Technical information

STEVE-2D, the previous model that is still available, performs movements with two degrees of freedom; STEVE-6D provides six degrees of freedom. The complex movements are carried out using a hexapod. A powerful control software individually controls the frequency and amplitude of each movement direction. The softwares analysis function automatically evaluates the recordings from the test chart TE261 and presents the results of the image stabilizers performance numerically and graphically.

Different vibrations can be generated using STEVE: a CIPA compliant vibration is possible as well as sine waves or individual waveforms. In order to reproduce the completed measurements, all movements can be repeated accurately and in the same way again using STEVE.

STEVE-6D is available in two sizes: STEVE-6DS and STEVE-6DL. They offer the same range of functions; they only differ in the maximum possible load.

Included in the delivery for STEVE-6D is the hardware (hexapod), the control and analysis software, the automated shutter-triggering device Digitus as well as the iQ-Mobilemount. Ideally, STEVE-6D should be combined with the test chart TE261 and the iQ-AF Box. A stable table is available as an accessory on which STEVE can be securely attached. Alternatively, STEVE can be mounted on the Honeycomb Breadbord, a stable board for use with an already available table.
